Nakisunga Commissioners of Disabled Persons is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation that was founded in 2008. The organisation was founded amist seeing the way the disabled persons are treated in the society. They were being discriminated in all sepheres of activity and society such as in service provision education, legistlation etc.
Families with children with disabilities face additional hardships and become often isolated. Disability has social and economic impact on the whole family. Families need to be empowered to be able to overcome barriers to inclusion of their children .
NCoDP creates opportunities through setting up of parent support groups and youth rights clubs. Families are equipped with skills and opportunities to overcome inequalities:
Persistent change and improvement can only be achieved when not only the persons with disabilities itself and the family is involved, but also the surrounding community. Attitudes within the whole community have to change to provide equal opportunities. Parent support groups and youth rights clubs are our most valuable tools to develop interventions and reduce stigma together with professionals, based on the community settings.
NCoDP through its partners facilitates community based rehabilitation. Hospitals and health care workers are provided with resources and equipment to be able to meet the needs of persons with disabilities. Parents are trained in providing home based care and produce necessary equipment locally and cost effective. Through the network of parent support groups skills and techniques can be shared and parents can learn from each other as well as support each other. Together, they can raise awareness within the community and reduce stigma.
The youth with disabilities can only improve if attitudes towards disability change. NCoDP works through innovative approaches, making youth with disabilities and their families direct agents of change and enabling them to raise their voices. We work with other organisations and stakeholders to raise awareness in disability issues and work towards equal opportunities and rights.
